I've been lucky enough to find a study group that meets weekly. My mother started the course a few years ago on her own and struggled through before quiting a short time later. It's a mind bender!
I found reading "Return to Love" made it a little easier to absorb the information.
We are currently reading Chapter 8- The Journey Back. I love the quote "Evaluate the ego based on it's results".... Simplistic!
Anyone else have affirmations or quotes from the course that resonate with them? :)

Re: Just started the course
Tue, October 3, 2006 - 10:02 AM"Let this be your agreement with each brother: that you be one with him and not apart. And he will keep the promise that you make with him, because it is the one that he has made to God, as God has made to him. God keeps His promises; His Son keeps his. In his creation did his Father say, 'You are beloved of Me and I of you forever. Be you perfect as Myself, for you can never be apart from Me.' His Son remembers not that he replied 'I will,' though in that promise he was born. Yet God reminds him of it every time he does not share a promise to be sick, but lets his mind be healed and unified. His secret vows are powerless before the Will of God, Whose promises he shares. And what he substitutes is not his will, who has made promise of himself to God."

Re: Just started the course
Thu, May 31, 2007 - 11:46 PMI'm only on lesson 21 so no powerful inspiration as of yet, though "no unshared thoughts" and a desire to 'see' have struck me. I just wanted to recommend Eckhart Tolle, "the power of now" That was one of the last bits of syncronicity that pushed me to find the course, and so far seems to align perfectly, oh yeah, and is PHENOMINAL. -

Re: Just started the course
Fri, June 1, 2007 - 8:43 AMYou don't really need a special affirmation.
There are 365 of them called the Workbook.
You do not need to complete the text to start the WB.
The text is like the sheet you get with the medicine at the pharmacy.
The WB is like taking the medicine. Take it. Just start doing the daily
lessons as soon as you feel comfortable with where ACIM is leading you.
There really is no substitute. Just do it. -

Re: Just started the course
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 11:43 AMPerfectly said, Mark.
People either get it or they don't, it seems.
And the single most powerful variable that moves a person to continue on their lessons through completion is just how much that person was suffering in their life up to the point that The Course was introduced to them.
If there's a way to hide in the illusion of comfort and protection that money seems to offer (yours or that of someone willing to pay your way in the world), then what is being made available is not valued or appreciated as much.
I came up with the idea of "puppy training the mind"... which is how I see what The Course is able to do... very gently shift our awareness without throwing us headlong into awakening... how very scary to open one's eyes to the light, eh? No telling what you might see when you're no longer in the dark.

Re: When I started the course
Fri, July 20, 2007 - 2:13 PMMark says it well, I agree with him.
When I did A Course in Miracles it was in the late 70's. I started doing the lessons in the workbook before all the material was even assembled. I was a teenager, my father knew Bill and Helen. Helen was channeling the Course, and Bill was taking it down. Helen was not a ready believer, but the Course started coming to her after she said to herself, "There must be a better way."
While the Course was still being received, some of us started to do the lessons. I would get xeroxed copies of the daily lessons sent to me in Hawaii, where I lived at the time, from my father in Connecticut. The books were not yet complete. I would be sent the early chapters of the text, too, to read while I was doing the daily lessons.
At that time there weren't any groups or workshops, just some people doing the Course. The advice I was given, and which I passed on to others I knew who started doing A Course in Miracles was to do one lesson a day, but if you felt you didn't actually do the lesson as told in the Workbook, then to do it the next day instead of moving on to the next lesson. There is no need to agree with the material, just do it as instructed. If it takes you two or three days till you have completed one lesson that's fine. But do each lesson. In this way it took me a year and a half to complete the Course.
I read from the Textbook as I worked my way through the Workbook. Some people think you should read the Textbook first before starting the Workbook. I understand that is the order in which it was originally channeled. But from what I was told in the early days, and what I believe to be true from experience, is to start with the Workbook lessons. Start to read the Textbook at any time once involved in the lessons. You can even finish up the reading after completing all 365 lessons.
Attending groups is not a requirement. If you like the group experience, fine. It does help some people stay motivated. I attended a few group meetings near the end and after I completed the Course, but my personal opinion is that the groups can be distracting, too many confused opinions. If you want to do A Course in Miracles, you don't need to join a group. Just do it!
I highly recommend A Course in Miracles. It will change your life.

Re: Just started the course
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 12:01 PMHi... and welcome!
Here is a familiar "prayer" that always puts everything back into proper perspective:
"I am here only to be truly helpful.
I am here to represent Him Who sent me.
I do not have to worry about what to say or what to do,
because He Who sent me will direct me.
I am content to be wherever He wishes, knowing he goes there with me.
I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal."
Chap. 2, Part V: Section A: Special Principles of Miracle Workers, Verse 18
***
I've been a student of The Course for more than 20 years, and I've watched numerous would-be students come and go. It's heady, esoteric material, no doubt about it... but once you "get" it, you GET it, right?
Peace 2 U,
Dave

Re: Just started the course
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 1:51 PMOr maybe, it takes just "a little willingness" to open
the workbook each morning with breakfast, read the lesson
and do it each morning-- and a little willingness next morning.
It's easy to find excuses to not do the lessons, it's also easy
to do them. What's required is wanting to do it.
You might say, "I dont have time." But we always have time
to stay on the "nightmare path" of nurturing our grievances...
When will we find time to practice "the summer path" of
just a few minutes spent with the daily lessons as the inexpensive
price for a life of joy? Consider the time and cost of the alternative. -

Re: Just started the course
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 6:08 PMI had the good fortune to meet Denis Moore in 1988 who is
now associated with the CIM center in Portland, but used to
be in the SF Bay Area. Then he invited his friends from San
Diego (now Hawai'i) Jack and Layle Luckett who were close
friends of Bill Thetford, Judy Skutch and Jerry Jampolsky in
the '70's. The rest is history.
