It just suddenly occurred to me that their might be a Course in Miracles tribe. Sure enough - here you are! I'm happy to find you....

Does anyone know of an ACIM groups in San Francisco? Any thoughts on being in a group vs. doing the course on your own.

Peace - Newt

Both of the Unity Churches in SF have very nice groups.

Not a good idea to study alone-- it does confront your
belief system and you can get lost in its heady philosophy
and turn it into an intelectual exercise pretty easily. Good
fellows students will help you keep it real.

I think it's fine to study alone. But then when I first did the Course in the 1970's there wasn't anyone in the area I was in (Big Island, HI) that was doing the Course. My father was sending me workbook pages and beginning text chapters through the mail. It was before the first set of books were published.

I think that the instruction is thorough enough that one does not need other possibly confused people to help you through it. If you have an experienced Course in Miracles teacher, then a group can be productive, though.

I found when I finished the Course around 1978 and attended a few groups, that it could help to question the sticky points together with others who were having a hard time with those things. But it also sometimes left me feeling confused because they would come up with questions that weren't bothering me.

Perhaps because I was still quite young, a teenager, when I did the Course, in contrast to the others who had already lived many years and set patterns of living that were in such contrast to the teachings of the Course it was easier for me to accept the teachings presented to me while I was doing it by myself. I did sometimes talk about it with my father in letters or phone calls.

Groups can be a great support though. Especially if you are tempted to stop with the lessons. Having others to meet with can keep you on track.

I am doing A Course In Miracles again. I'm in my 40's this time. It's somewhat easier doing It the second time.

I also think it's fine to study without other people around. I say that, instead of saying "alone", because your not alone when your studying the Course. The Holy spirit is with you, and Christ is with you. Open dialog with the Holy Spirit is a goal of the Course.

It talks about it at the end of the lessons this way. pg 485

"Let us turn to Him Who leads the way and makes our footsteps sure."

I don't think the goal of the Course is listening to the words that other people speak,
even when they mean well, but what you hear when anyone speaks, in any language,
as you listen to them together with the Holy Spirit.

      pg 486

"We come in honesty to God and say we did not understand,
and ask Him to help us to learn His lessons through the Voice of His Own Teacher."
